DB Energy and Last Energy have signed a cooperation agreement – the next stage of SMR development in Poland begins
DB Energy, as the first company in Poland to offer industrial clients access to energy from small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs), has signed a framework cooperation agreement with U.S.-based Last Energy – a leader in SMR technology. The agreement, concluded on February 15, 2023, is another step following the letter of intent signed in 2022 between Last Energy, the Legnica Special Economic Zone (LSSE), and DB Energy.
Cooperation for industry and energy transition
The aim of the agreement is to jointly develop a model for delivering zero-emission electricity to industrial consumers in Poland – particularly from energy-intensive sectors such as the chemical, metallurgical, and food industries. According to earlier arrangements, the plan is to build ten SMR (Small Modular Reactor) units with a total capacity of 200 MW in industrial zones, including within the LSSE area.
A new model of energy supply – PPA from a nuclear power plant
Under the cooperation framework, DB Energy will be responsible for acquiring industrial clients interested in long-term green energy purchase contracts in the PPA (Power Purchase Agreement) model. Last Energy will provide the construction, financing, and operation of SMR units. As a result, clients will gain access to cheap, stable, and clean electricity without the need to commit their own capital.
SMR technology – the future of zero-emission industry
The modular nuclear power plant technology developed by Last Energy is based on proven PWR (pressurized water reactor) solutions used for decades in nuclear energy. Thanks to its modular design and component repeatability, it is possible to quickly deploy units with a capacity of approximately 20 MWe each – with full prefabrication and minimal interference with local infrastructure.
The Polish economy needs cheap, stable, and zero-emission energy, especially in energy-intensive industries. SMR solutions can genuinely contribute to increasing the competitiveness of Polish companies and play an important role in the country’s energy transition. At DB Energy, we not only provide advice but actively build the market for new energy – for the benefit of both business and the climate.
About Last Energy
Last Energy is a U.S.-based company specializing in the development of small modular reactors (SMRs), headquartered in Washington, D.C. The company is developing the PWR-20 project – a 20 MWe reactor distinguished by low costs, a short implementation time (approximately 24 months), and full prefabrication. Last Energy is actively pursuing projects in the USA, the United Kingdom, and Central and Eastern Europe.
